Are you driving down the highway at top speed and happen to look at your odometer only to realize that you reached a mileage of 100000 with no major issues to your car. Slowly, you realize the temperature gauge and know you are in for some trouble. You smell something from the engine coolant. You need to get rid of this before anything more dangerous happens. This is when you may need to conduct a water pump replacement.
The pump runs with the help of a belt and operates when the car engine is made to run. To do a water pump replacement, you would first need to park the car overnight. Place a piece of paper under the car. Check if there is a leak from the water pump the next morning. If there is green liquid on the paper, it would indicate that a leak is present. Turn off the engine and lift the hood open. Look for the water pump pulley where the car belt is attached to. As there is more than one pulley, look for the right one. If unsure, consult a mechanic.
Check if the pulley is loose. If so, it is definitely time to change the water pump. Also, if the gasket of the water pump is leaking, you would need to change it.
If you have been driving your vehicle for long, neglecting its maintenance, you are bound to experience heater core failure. This means that the liquid coolant to lose its protective nature and become corrosive. This in turn reacts with the metals in the cooling system in the car causing rusting from within. When this happens, heater core replacement would need to be done. This can be done either through a mechanic or by yourself. In order to change the heater core, the cooling system of the car has to first be drained. Then disassembling of the insides of the car and dashboard need to be carried out. The A/C may also have to be serviced in the process. If this seems beyond your knowledge, it would be advisable to consult a mechanic
